So many of the places we've visited thus far include "cliff dwellers" that we chose to skip the Gila Cliff Dwellers National Park in New Mexico. Instead we took a leisurely drive from Benson, Arizona to El Paso, Texas. We thought about crossing the border into Juarez, Mexico for dinner but decided against that, too. We intend to take a trolley tomorrow into Juarez for the morning and then begin driving towards San Antonio, Texas, a nine-hour drive. We will probably skip Carlsbad Caverns National Park as well. Ann drove me while I sat in the back of the van and worked on the web page.
The southern parts of Arizona and New Mexico are flat, punctuated by the occasional mountain or mountain range. The scenery is boring, frankly. Everything is dry. Interstate 10 started for us in Phoenix and continued through Benson and El Paso. It continues on through San Antonio, too.
Juarez seems larger than El Paso. At night the lights go on forever. There are no hills and the entire city lies exposed. It looks huge. The story on the evening news tonight stated that U.S. citizens will need passports to enter Juarez starting January 1, 2000.
It was a slow day.
