We visited Mesa Verde National Park and drove to Canyon De Chelly in Arizona. We stopped at Four Corners and stood in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona simultaneously. A plaque marks the spot. We did some shopping for some Native American jewelry and art at the shops that surround the border. Tomorrow we will visit Canyon De Chelly and then drive to the Grand Canyon.
Mesa Verde contains the remains of some cliff dwellings. The homes were built of adobe and wood and have withstood the past thousand years admirably. The term "cliff dwellings" gives the impression that these homes were perched on a cliff in a dangerous location. The homes were built on cliffs but there were ways of accessing the homes that didn't involve climbing cliffs. Of course, we only visited the Cliff Palace, the largest and grandest of the remains. Many other smaller dwellings exist and we did not see how precarious these homes were.
The weather finally turned colder and winds on top of Mesa Verde were chilly.
