in Odenton. A couple of young ladies were on vacation from Baltimore. We see a lot more young people out visiting the national parks than we anticipated. Most, however, are European. The vacationing Americans are mostly of retirement age and many are driving huge motor homes. The Europeans cover every age group and nationality. There seem to be as many Europeans out visiting the parks as Americans. There are numerous Asians, too, but not as many as there were at Yellowstone and Yosemite.
We also saw a new type of animal in southern Utah. It has a red vest, red cap, sits two and three abreast in pickup trucks and drives up and down the highways with guns and binoculars looking for other animals. Yes, the hunters are out there. Most of the ones we saw seemed too lazy to walk the fields and just drove everywhere trying to spot animals. Sometimes they weren't even watching where they were driving. A few could be seen scouring the fields next to the highways. We wondered how long it would be until the bullets started whizzing past the van. One could never convince these men to sit so close together for any other reason but they crowd into that pickup to kill deer. The animals aren't stupid, though. They all flock to the national parks and calmly eat alongside the road knowing that they can't legally be shot there.
