We checked out of the Excalibur this morning.  Weekends in Las Vegas seem hurried and crowded.  We stopped by the breakfast buffet and saw a waiting line that must have been an hour long.  We skipped the wait and headed for the road.

We drove to Cedar City, Utah in anticipation of visiting Zion National Park tomorrow.  Along the way we stopped at two visually stimulating places.

The first place we stopped was Red Rock Canyon.  Red Rock Canyon is part of the National Park system and lies about twenty miles to the west of Las Vegas.  The canyon takes its name from a layer of red sandstone that is sandwiched in amongst the other rocks.  The highlight of the Canyon is a thirteen-mile one-way loop that stops by the Calico Rocks.

The second place we drove through was a Nevada State park called Valley of Fire.  Valley of Fire features soft sandstone that blazes red.  The sandstone is soft and porous, causing holes to form in the rocks.  The blue water of Lake Meade is visible in the distance.  Additionally, there are numerous petroglyphs in the rocks.  We saw a coyote walking across the road and several wild burros in the distance.
